Nothing is in walking distance from LAX BUT you can get the bus to Santa Monica and hang around either Main Street or (even better) the 3rd St. Promenade. It will take you around 40 mins. each way depending on traffic, but it's a straight run.
Alternatively, threadposts idea is a good one. Grab a cab and head on down.
There's lots to do outside the airport - Venice and Santa Monica and both recommended.
