I work about 5 minutes from LAX in Marina Del Ray. You can grab a cab to Venice Beach for a walk on the board walk (muscle beach, loads of freaks and people watching), there are also a million restaurants and bars in venice and lots of cool design, furniture, gallery, clothing, vintage stores.
Its true, the area around most airports are total shiite and LAX is the same if you are on foot, but if you're willing to drop $15 on a cab ride to Marina Del Ray, Venice or Santa Monica, there is some cool shit to do with a 4 hour window.
