I was minding a 10-tape drive that backed up our server a couple jobs ago. The problem with a tape drive is that it's slow, and only really useful for a total death/replacement. Finding individual files is painful, and pro-level backup software isn't the easiest thing to figure out.

What I would recommend is getting something like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner and multiple external hard drives.

Set a schedule so that every weeknight at 11PM, the drive with your data is cloned to the external drive.

I'd do at least 4 drives - use two for daily backups (alternating drives each week). Take your third drive and make a backup at the end of every week. Take the fourth, and do a monthly backup.

Any drive you're not using that day/week should be held off site. And not all at the same location.

The important thing to remember is that all drives will fail eventually. They're not indestructible, especially if you're moving them around. Maybe each monthly backup should be burned to DVD when it's done?
