Ok, so I finally saw this film. Overall, I really agree with kelpie's thoughts.
Worst things about the movie:
-The hype surrounding it. Well written, but not earth shattering at all. Some positive themes about youth, feminism, and responsibility, but a very safe indie film.
-That fucking dialogue. Enough with the ironic hipster speak and hamburger phones.Best things about the movie:
-Fantastic character development. I really thought I had everyone pegged as their surface stereotypes. Loved the reveal of sincere and oft unexpected depth to all characters, and some real nice honest moments. That mall scene was lovely.
-That fucking dialogue. A few laughs, but it taught me a very very valuable writing lesson for my own filmmaking aspirations. I may be inclined to write in my own pseudo speak and marvel at my cleverness, but that shit gets annoying and contrived real fast.*Note: That said, if Diablo Cody's true underlying message is "you may think you have me pegged as a young hipster writer and this generation figured out as being callow and predictable, but guess again," than that would be a brilliant bit of subversion. If not, well...let's see what the ex-stripper does next.
A fun flick though.
