Just say that due to the current economic climate you can no longer afford to keep him on. Reassure him he's still a good designer (if he is) but because he's the newest to the team he's also unluckily the 1st to feel the effects of the pinch. Tell him to keep in touch (if he's any good as good designers are hard to find).
Don't lie to him else you might get his mate come on here slagging your company off...
