So anyhoo...
My guess on this storyline is that perhaps these six characters were let go on condition they revealed nothing about the true fate of those who are still on the island, otherwise they'd be killed or something. That would explain Hurley denying knowing who Ana Lucia was, that dude saying "They're alive aren't they", and then Jack/Hurley's discussion about "you gonna tell anyone?"
