i was in manual labor for about 5 years until landing a gig as a webdesigner. got laid off after college and got a job at target to pay the bills (which never happened because target dont pay shit) had a few other meaningless jobs. decided i needed more income and threw together a quick webportfolio and started working on a friends site, put that stuff in the portfolio and spent a lot of time on monster.com and etc.

find books or articles in print or online and read as much as you can to keep up on trends and styles and practices. for me i read jeffrey zeldmans stuff and alistapart.com

do comps and "personal" work. anything you can develop pieces to put in your portfolio and expand your skillset.

just dont do any comps for samsung, vague will eat your ass.
