'People' upscale their movies for the exact same reason 'people' can't see the problem when asked to Photoshop a web photograph into a poster-sized print - they simply don't understand the underlying restrictions in technology. They've been sold 'new whizzbang HD thingamajig' and by god, they're going to use it.
The sad part is, they've just spent all that money on a new player & TV and they probably don't even notice the fact that the file they've upscaled is no better than the DVD original. I suspect that, once you've taken compression artefacts in to account, the actual quality will be significantly less..
