um... if you are basing your judgement of alaska on google maps, it's not really that big. the mercator projection used for their maps greatly distorts land masses at the poles to make them appear MUCH larger than they really are. look at alaska on a globe and then compare it to the u.s.
based on wiki's stats... alaska (663,267 sq mi) is about 2.5 times as large as texas (261,797 sq mi).
