I like Foxycart - it's VERY simple to use. I've had 100% good experience across two websites with it. Among the benefits - granted you pay for these but:

The staff works dillegently every day innovating the foxycart
The staff is very responsive to changes to the cart as suggested by the community.
The staff handles all security patches - all you have to do is update the cart periodically w/the click of a mouse.
The transaction tracking / reporting is very easy to use.
The cart integrates nicely with Modx, fairly nicely with Joomla, and any coders out there should have NO issue at all.
    It's fun to use
but most of all, unlike free solutions, it's SUPPORTED.
It's so flexible, you can do downloadables, donations, products, etc. I use it on http://www.africafire.com to take donations, and on another website to sell podcasts.

And it can also do conference registrations.

For the developer, there's nothing better, and for the novice, nothing easier.
