I'm one of the us-bashers, but I don't think this has anything to do with american culture. It is more about the post-modern society with people living their own lives and not caring for others. Something like this could just as well happen here in Europe.
My girl is actually a doctor so she has had to tell lots of people, sorry you can't drive no more. It is hard to do and it just could be that some unlucky family doctor is going to get the blame for this.
I just loved the remark:
he is just an old man, don't beat him up.
So basically if he had been a latino youngster he would have been killed right on the spot.
