Its an area of, for example 40% black (a grey, visually speaking). When the printer outputs the films (or ST plates these days) the grey area has to be translatsed into a screen of dots, like a black and white newspaper picture. That dotting translation process is called halftoning. You can use it to cheat third colours, but be warned.. too fine and it will fill in, too crude and it will dominate the design.
I'm guessing I'm the most appealling by now with all my knowledge on and everthing/
