    Familiar as in known to them, obviously.

    This is a completely different thing to the people dying in the war, the reactions are for different reasons, probably that someone of comparable age and who provides a common context passes and people are inclined to look at their own mortality. Wars are massive, semi-abstract things in people's minds, which are debated in other terms. The sheer scale dehumanises those affected to those who are disconnected from it. That's a perfectly normal human coping mechanism, otherwise you would bang your head off that wall till the futility of it all drove you insane

    It bothers ME that people would use this opportunity to chastise and lecture others about this, do you really think you are the only person who cares? or are you perhaps so lacking in genuine human charity that you can't help preaching at your peers in the context of someones death?
