a photographer friend of mine who had a very successful commercial career in NYC but now lives in a very small city told me that when you are younger you tend not to be defined artistically so a place like NYC or London mirrors an image of who you want to be.
As you find your own voice and gain confidence, you are able to focus on the work itself, rather than the image of the artist/designer. For him that meant needing to leave the city because he felt that it distracted him from the work.
