firstly, useless, self-gratifying reach around sites...
honestly, the last thing i care about when looking at a portfolio or personal site is someone daily 'news' update or political agenda...
i hate sites that don't tell me about the methods, path and experience with a particular project yet provide me with the same dumb links i can get at any 'design' portal.
a portfolio is not a editorial column, and i find it very unprofessional to burdon a viewer with non-sensical prose.
second, useless sites in general..."pretty" only lasts a few seconds...rarely do i stick around a website if it doesn't have some form of usable function.
third, the lack of usability and maturity in web design...i don't know why web designers believe they can continue without accepting the importance of usability, accessibility and standards within the web.
we command how this entity exists...users don't, nor do browser developers...if designers would suck up their minute bits of pride and do things right, then the web, browsers and users would fall into line. we do it in software development all the time...the builders dictate...but it only works if everyone supports it.
