I think original signet rings were always cut from a soft stone mineral... opal or jade. Seals are usually a Brass head on a hardwood staff... I'm trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about here but really don't have idea. As for Ian... he's been in the game for a long long time. He's a really interesting bloke/business but you wouldn't think to talk to him. When I worked in corporate identity design in the nineties at Newell&Sorrell and DMB&B, I used to get him to do all the brand guideline covers and final sign-off binders etc. Does a really lovely job. Can do really nice small quantity blind or blocked embossing/debossing into book covers wrapped in pretty much whatever you'd like. He'll deny it all, but trust me, he's really good.
