The same thing has happened to me 2yrs ago. I flew out in Montreal and didn't know my greencard has expired. when I landed in Montreal, i showed my passport and greencard and nobody said anything. then on my way back, we were driving back in to Vermont.

We got to the checkpoint and show my driver's license, my gf is an American so she had no problem just with that. the custom officer looked at me and asked me for my passport and greencard. i handed to him, yeah, i got all the SHIT, duuuudde!. He checked them then went like..."Sir, do you realize your greencard is expired? what do you do in New york?"

me: I work for an ad agency.
him: so, you are telling me that you live in NYC and work in USA illegally.
me: well, i guess TECHNICALLY that's correct. I wasn't aware my green card expired.
him: sir, you need to drive to the side and come in to the office.

so i went in to the building and they make me wait for like 10min. the officer is checking on the computer screen about my record. I travel a bit so my passport has so many entry stamp. the officer called another guy to check something on my record. looking super suspicious.

finally, the guy called me and said "fill this form in when you get back home" and handed me a document. i was like... that's is??

i went back to the car and told my gf "hon, they gonna retain me here till things gets resolved, probably for a couple of days. you should just drive and see your friends in Vermont. I'll be fine"

i was still freaked out i might get deported for some weird reason. now i know i have to renew every 10yrs.
