It is absolutely ok but work on the wording when sending an email or resume around. Try not to put things like "Dear HR," or "Dear Companyxyz". Make it a bit more personal to let the company know you're not just sending out your resume in mass quantities to whomever. Get the name of a company, go to their site, look it over, if you like them try your best to get as much info as possible to send your resume to the specific person you need to. Call the company and when their secretary answers tell them you're interested in working for the company and you'd like to know who you could send your resume to.
Coming out of college I think most of them will get you'll be a junior designer so you might not have to ask or request a jr. position.
