i actually had a similar problem when i had gotten my new g4 many years ago. spent a week on the phone with applecare and they couldn't help me.
i eventually fixed it by opening it up and holding down a little black button on the board for a few seconds. Dunno how thats gonna work with an imac though...- that resets the PRAM, you can do via keyboard nowstupidresponse
