    I have the exact same problem. I really like gaming, but I only play like 3 titles per system.

    I think one of the biggest problem for me is not just the silly stories and characters, but the pace. I remember playing Shenmue and how incredible absorbing it was. this is what I expected gamemakers to do with 3d, but sadly it's all about fast flashy graphics.

    Here's my list of favorite games:

    Shenmue
    Rez
    Vib Ribbon
    Ico
    Shadow of the C.
    Metal Gear Solid series
    Snatcher
    Uru
    Metroid Prime
    All the great Nintendo titles
    (they feel more adult to me than most of those scifi space marines games with their nu metal soundtracks)
