this is the kinda stuff that we have to do at work sometimes.
screenprinting is definitly one way. it is the most expensive and probably the best, but there are other options.
as raskoh mentioned, some metals can be etched.
you can also print on adhesive vinyl papers if you want a full color print or if it is just one or a couple of colors, then you can cut solid color vinyls and stick them to the cleaned surface. these are pretty durable and can look quite nice depending on the application.
