Dc, I've lived in all 3 cities. SF to Vegas is a long drive, about 9 hours. Not worth it, and you have to drive damn near to LA(Bakersfield) to get to the highway to Vegas. Your best bet would be to fly JetBlue or Southwest, they've got like $19 one ways to Vegas.
Then if you want, get a rental car down into LA, that's a short drive. If you do it at night or early morning, with less traffic, you can get to LA in under 4 hours.
