I am a UI designer for e-commerce software. I would have to give Zen Cart a very low usability rating. The menus are huge and not labeled intuitively. Working on similar tasks can be across multiple menus. You have to be very tech savvy to customize anything. Instead of a simple UI control you will find yourself digging though 10 directory levels to change code in files. Files are named similarly in multiple folders. You may run into problems with no straightforward solutions. It is incredibly cumbersome to remove the junk in the side columns and elsewhere. I didn't even get into site design.
I was trying to use it for the recurring billing module. It was a waste of time. I ditched it and coded it all custom with the authorize.net api and it was way easier and cleaner.
