Hey dc -
I just moved back to SF from the UK. Having lived in SF before and worked in LA, I used to commute a couple different ways. Do you drive in the UK?
The drive is cool, if you have the time and are with someone else, so that you can look out the window on occassion. The scenic route takes some 8hrs I think...
There is the back road - so to speak, being Highway 5, which runs you down a valley of California and along an almost straight road for some 4 hours. On this route, it is possible to get to Passedena (on the outside of LA) in 4hrs and 45 minutes.
Driving in LA is quite an experience, and not the most enjoyable thing to do - but the simplest version of the whole trip would be to pick up a ticket from SF to LA, and drive out to Vegas. as Kid_A said.
I can't personally recommend where to stay in Vegas - but I have plenty of friends who probably could - I'll get back to you.
