stud, in all honesty, you have this thing pieced together poorly, it shouldn't be such a problem. and as far as the "variable width", it will only get as big as the container which could in all honesty be enlarged to 760 imo
try a new css of container then a header and body inside the container with separate divs handling content.
that menu of yours should be it's own css file so as not to distract you from your layout css
i could redo this page for 500 if you need it today let me know
