I'm no sportsfan, but looking at that video, it looks like the difference between rugby and American football is that in rugby, people have to think a little bit about what they're doing - whereas in American football, the catcher doesn't pay attention to his surroundings and the attacker just runs at him. At him. Not tackling him - just running into him.
Not having body armour probably means that rugby players have to play a little more 'intelligently'.
Either way, both sports are deathly dull - though I think I've tolerated watching rugby for at least a half or so in my time - American football, with all its timeouts and adverts is soporific.
