    Rodin translated these shortcomings into an embodiment of robust strength. ‘Balzac’, he said, ‘is before everything a creator and this is the idea I would wish to make understood in my statue’. In the popular imagination, creativity was linked with virility and in one study (not on show), Rodin shows Balzac clutching a giant erection. A masturbating man would not have been acceptable, of course, but the finished work is no less remarkable.
