That's a fairly stupid thing to say - as a really crude comparison, I bet your country wishes it had a trillion-dollar military behemoth at its disposal on the morning of 9/11. No, hold on, wait...
I'd guess that a respected, presumably quite intelligent middle class doctor would rather not have a specifically unlocked receptacle for a lethal weapon at knee-height, easily accessible to his kids.
In life, bad things do happen. Unlike the movies, there aren't usually any black and white resolutions.
Throwing more firepower in to the already murky equation is .. illogical.
