On a related tangent, not sure how many saw this show on PBS about the making of samurai swords:

What I found interesting was the rituals still used by the guys who forge the original steel - using the same shinto rituals that have been used for a millenia. The narrator made a good point, and I'll paraphrase:
"Without benefit of a scientific understanding of how carbon and steel intermix and how to create those chemical formula again and again, these religious rituals insured that the process was followed exactly time and time again to produce the same results - making the production of this steel truly a sacred act."
I would imagine that much of the Biblical religions ar ethe same - especially with the emphasis on law after proscribed law in the Ole Testament. That without the insights brought about by the modern scientific paradigms, sacred rituals were needed to reproduce time and time again similar results for health, manufacturing, agriculture, etc.
The Bible is a manual for successful living in a non-technological world.
Deal with it.
