I'd say get the applecare, just take it to a good reseller service provider instead of the apple store when shit breaks. many of them cover their service under apple care, yet without the shitty service that the apple stores provide. every experience i've had with the apple store has been shitty and their "genius" folk are always the cause of their shittiness.
for what it's worth, i've had 2 fans and a keyboard replaced on my MBP under applecare.
