my guess is that images on the front page are randomly chosen from image that have more than one follower and are newly posted. And I think that the suggested photos have nothing to do with the images themselves, but are culled from others images you have marked, i.e. the people who you follow's images. When ffffound first started and there were 30 people on it every image you would "ffffind" would be on the front page. Those were the days.
