Consider going there for something beyond sightseeing. There are tons of places you can volunteer at there, and you'll get an amazing experience out of it, and end up in places you would have never thought about. It's a super diverse place so what region you end up visiting will be a big part of it, food-wise, language, customs, religion, etc...
I went there last year and spent a few weeks doing graphic design for this animal rescue org in a village north of Bangalore. And while I was there, I got to hang out with a sloth bear, witnessed the massive following of Sai Baba, visited wildlife sanctuaries, attended an engagement ceremony, and met some of the nicest people ever on a trip. I have tons of links for ya, just let me know where you want to visit. There's a huge experimental city called Chandigarh (sp) north of N.D. that was designed on this very strict grid system. Pretty interesting.
Don't worry about malaria pills unless there's a warning for your area, those pills are harsh. if you're vegetarian, it's a total paradise!
