MP3s are fast, easy, and cheap. I don't have an ear for detail so I could care less if I'm listening to a 128k or 320k bitrate file. I'm not at all interested in investing the hundreds upon hundreds, or indeed thousands, to "hear" something that to me is totally imperceptible anyway.
That said, I don't *totally* cheap out, either. The least I can do is put on a $50 pair of headphones because although I can't tell the difference between OK and great quality, I sure can tell between OK and crap.
In other words:
it's completely subjective
