    edd-e,

Well, a record needle certainly hits non-musical substances in the grooves of records. Dust and dirt, as well as physical imperfections, like bubbles in the vinyl, cause pops and crackles that are largely eliminated in digital music. LPs are also plagued by tracking errors, wow-and-flutter trancription errors and other mastering errors, a dynamic range limited by the needle's ability to stay in the groove, inertia problems that cause high frequencies to be poorly transcribed, poor stereo imaging caused by the one needle trying to transcribe two different tracks, feedback through the needle at high volume. Also, they wear rapidly and are physically fragile.

And, yes, if people dance near the record player, it frequently skips.
