    Actually, Illy is brilliant for doing 3D text, it's just a bit slow and fiddly.

    One thing to do is once you've flattened the resultant object, break it apart, hide the 'top' front-facing layer (ie. the original inner text), then analyse the components that make up the depth. The annoying thing is that Illy over-fragments these pieces, so if you logically group these components (the upper half of the inner circle in an o, for example), merge, reduce the number of points, then add a gradient, you can achieve quite a powerful level of control.

    As I said, it can be fiddly, but having just done a project using Illy's 3D bit, I can assure you it is worthwhile. More so than starting from scratch with a full-on 3D package, anyway. (for me, imho, naturally).
