    I am just a weekend Lisboner like yourself Ian, don't know anything outside the centre.

    It is quite walkable, but as I said, public transport is part of the fun over there if ancient rollercoaster sounds fun to you. The buses and trams make much more sense than Dublin's (I mean you don't need to be local to know where the stops are) and aren't as packed as London's.
    Really, the daily ticket + a map gets you sorted. In the centre, you get on an old tram and see where it takes you, then take a walk around the area, get on another tram.. just make sure you try all the elevators and funiculares!

    Bairro Alto is great for both bar/restaurant interior design checking and eating/drinking in. Lots of nice shops there too.

    I heard Alfama is not recommended for after-dark walkarounds.. :)

    We stayed close to a building called Teatro Eden (I think it's a hotel now). Stunning Art Deco.
