Bottom line is album sales isn't the end all be all of their investments. Artists at any level are a full package from live shows, singles and t-shirts. There's money to be made no matter what, music sells. It's like asking "But who's going to offset the cost of the free peanuts on the bar?" The answer is more beer sales. Why do restaurants give free bread at the beginning of meal? You'll drink more. Granted it's not exactly the record company that has decided to do this to sell more stuff it's just the consumer who did it, morally or not, but the companies are going to have to learn to start giving away peanuts for free to sell more beer. The people have spoken.
