"stealing" is not just stealing in the eyes of the law. what if someone emailed it to me? if i choose not to pay for a subscription i'm still not doing anything illegal when i download an mp3 somewhere else. talk to any lawyer and see how many loop holes there are in ownership law or theft laws and what not especially when it comes to information. it gets complicated no doubt but it's the law we're talking about.
makes me think of used CD stores. you could in theory make a business out of buying "used" paid for legally downloaded mp3s and sell them for less but it makes no sense because they're mp3s not cds, who's gonna buy a used mp3? labels and bands make nothing from companies that resell cds so are they stealling?
