Illy gradient transparency

    It can be done, never doubt illlustrator.

    Let's say you want a rectangle that fades from blue to transparency.

    First make a solid blue rectangle. Now duplicate that on top of the original and fill with a black and white gradient (like you would for a layer mask in pshop).
    Make sure the gradient is on top, then select both rectangles and in the 'Transparency" pallette click on the options arrow and select 'make opacity mask'

    voila, you're done.
