i agree with you for hte most part joy, although i don't really feel business owners are inherently evil, money suckers. At the same time, i do feel that a lot of them are savvy enough to understand a deal.
Whether you give deals or not, it's up to you to make it a point for them to understand that they are getting a deal.
They don't know that you're hurting for business. so if they are paying half your normal price, you tell them that. You tell them they are getting a deal because they seem like a good client, but because of this they are at the bottom of the priority list.
Every time they complain about not getting much from you, you explain how little you're getting from them.
It's not like you want clients reccommended form them anyways, as they're be twice as cheap. No really, they will want twice as much for half of what their friend paid.
I'm not saying to do bad work, just do it on your time. The priority when you're underpaid is to find higher paying clients. After your marketing and netwroking and learning is done, then you do their work. And never let the client know that they're the ones actually signing your rent check.
