have they demonstrated any sample sites they enjoy for you? i have a feeling they are not saying what they actually mean, but using terms that 'seem' like what they mean.
i find, about 97% of clients cannot tell you what they truely mean the first 3 times. samples help....... sometimes.

(Sep 4 07, 13:22)i asked them to see sample sites they like and dislike and they gave me nothing saying something like 'we want you to create something out of the blue, complete creative freedom' and i tried to explain that those are two seperate things, that seeing what they like will help me build what they like but they just didn't get it and gave me nothing.
