people may have different settings, but when you are designing the light/colour relationship may influence the quality of your work.
for example, when designing in a TFT if you move your head too much you may tend to neglect the overall "lighting" feel of the site. it looks to bright, or it looks to dark. In photos there's a huge lot of difference about light and darkness.
for more streamlined web work as corporate sites, updates, programming, etc, having this or that monitor is probably not that relevant - but it becomes relevant when you consider the artistic side of design.
