have you ever replaced the soil and trimmed the roots?
Bonsai require new medium often (every year or so). Remove it from the pot, place in some water and carefully work the soil out. trim 2/3rds of the root mass (or equal to what you have trimmed from the branches) It varies depending on the plant. repot and hope for teh best. Most bonsai do not do well in direct sun. If it was happy in a spot for 4 years then put it back. also make sure the water drains completly when you water it or the roots will rot.
