I would apply at places other than the one you have the contacts at. It saves a lot of red tape. I know you'd mentioned that you wanted to work there for a while but the main reasons you gave were "need something new, bigger challenge and a big step forward in my career." plus the money issue. You can get that at a lot of companies not just at this one specifically. If this is truly about your unhappiness then I would simply start applying to other jobs and avoid the non-compete etc. completely.
