My parents actually have a better idea of what I do than most of my friends. Most people have no idea what the difference is between an ad agency and a design firm.
Common ice-breakers that crack me up:
"So, what kind of graphs do you design?"
"That's done on a computer, right?"
"So what exactly do you do on a daily basis?"
"What's the name of your company?" – This gets blank stares when I answer, nobody outside the design/marketing world knows who we are. Frustrates people who've lived in the STL area all their lives.
Another fun one is trying to explain what InDesign is/does. Peoples' eyebrows furrow, then they change the subject to Photoshop :)
