There's a difference between doing spec work you give away, or get screwed into doing, and doing spec work that is intended to show of your capabilities and talent. There is no harm in that whatsoever, just keep in mind that you are selling yourself and your abilities to potential employers and clients. Just don't give that work away, should someone come knocking. Consider a healthy mix of real brands to create some stuff for, and 'made up' ones.
