I've done a few this year.
I tend to do them a third of the actual size. Of course with vector there's no problem doing them this way. Regarding the images I use I set them to 200 dpi, although my boss insists we do 150dpi.
The last I did was 7x3 feet. Set the doc to be a third of the final size with the BG (tiff) set to 200 dpi and the rest were vectors.
It came out really good. It was printed on water resistant vinyl or some shit like that. They were used at some local music festival.
