One of your brain's most crucial functions is to control the level of your consciousness. A mechanism in your brain stem's reticular activating system sifts through the mass of incoming information and decides which is important enough to alert the brain to. It does this by controlling the amount of electrical activity that each part of the brain receives.

In turn, your reticular activating system is influenced by your brain's decisions. It is this interplay between electrical activity and your decisions that determines alertness and consciousness.
