i think there's a big difference between a mammal which has been domesticated for centuries to bond and coexist with humans, and an insect.
i'd feel wretched if i ever ran over a dog but not so much for a roach, but that doesn't mean i go out of my way to kill even insects. unless they're in my house, at which point they get a burial at sea in the loo :)
