Why can't a political thread be of any decent level here? Why does it always seem only joe-average-like comments get posted here?

(Jul 12 07, 01:52)Crouwel my actual college degree was in Political Theory. Outside of an academic setting it is impossible to really discuss this shit in any detail. Discussing politics with the average (especially American) Joe is to try to explain a rainbow to people that only have the ability to see two colors. Not to say that people are dumb or politically unaware even, just that they don't have a contextual model to place alot of their concerns and interests in and you have a mass media that continues to dumb complex issues down and define the terminology and language the common culture uses to discuss these things.
Heck, I've come to the belief that the concepts of "left" and "right" are hopelessly outdated , and that these terms which where defined by who sat where in some dumb early French post-revolution congress have absolutely zero relevance to any political discussion today - yet we still insist on using (and in a deragoatory and inflammatory manner) "left" and "right".
I mean we have a sitting President from the "Right" party who has used the instrument of State to wage war based on a Enlightenment ideology (nation building? spreading democracy?) and expanded the powers of government in direct contention to the very ideals of the traditional American conservative Right ideology. The fact that he is still called "Right" and not a left-o facsist is because...um...because...he's rich maybe? I don't know...just trying to say it's impossible to have a meaningful political discussion with no context and hampered stilted terminology. Of course there might be those "out there" who find that useful. Just saying.
